Healthy gums are vital to ensuring a healthy mouth, with many cases of decaying, loose or missing teeth being caused by the advanced gum disease periodontitis. At Roseneath Dental Surgery, we have a specialist Periodontist on staff who can treat even the most advanced of periodontal conditions and save your smile.
What is Periodontitis?
Gum disease is when there is an infection, caused by a build-up of plaque on your teeth that can cause irritation in the gums. The early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, is what causes redness, swelling, bleeding gums and irritation. This is uncomfortable, but if left untreated it can lead to a more advanced stage of gum disease known as periodontitis.
Periodontitis is a more serious condition, which causes even further inflammation, and can spread to attack the gums and bone structure of your teeth. This can lead to pockets forming between the teeth and surrounding gums and a loss of the bone structure surrounding the teeth, which can eventually lead to tooth loss,

What Periodontal Treatments are Available?
If you have periodontitis, do not worry, there are options to treat you. Teeth scaling and root planning are advanced cleaning measures used to remove tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth, which will in time allow your gums to heal and naturally reattach to your tooth. Scaling is a dental hygiene technique that cleans and clears plaque deposits, whilst root planing is a technique that smooths down the root of your tooth to stop bacteria from being able to collect under your gumline.
If you are in an advanced state of gum disease and have already lost bone and gum material, we can also use surgical intervention to help. Bone grafts can add bone, either from another part of your body or using a specially made bone grafting material, to your jaw bone, which will make it strong and robust enough to support your teeth again. Gum grafts can be used to reduce the long tooth effect of periodontitis. Along with this we also offer crown lengthening treatments to expose more of a tooth and allow a crown to be more easily placed, or just to remove excess gums and remove the “gummy smile” effect.
